Glitter Eneloop Packs

In late 2011 we introduced a short line of eneloop receiver and transmitter packs using the Eneloop “Glitter” cells, in a wide range of voltages, configurations and colours. After a brilliant response to these discounted battery packs, we now have only transmitter packs available. These are available in four different colours; Red, Pink, Gold and Green.

Low Self Discharge

As previously mentioned, we have now introduced a new range of Low Self Discharge NIMH battery packs to our exsisting ‘Premium Sport’ range, with ten variations of pack sizes and variations for receivers and transmitters.

LSD NiMH batteries were introduced into the market in 2006, with monumental success. LSD NiMH facilitates the technologies of both alkaline and NiMH batteries, resulting in a cell that gives the best of both worlds; superb low discharge rates, long shelf life, recharge-ability and enhanced performance.

Overlander’s new additions to the range of Premium Sport batteries uses this technology, with a wide variety of applications, to provide superior performance and life of your cells and battery packs for motors, transmitter and receivers.

The new Overlander technology provides much higher performance, and has a much longer life than cheaper alternatives, but for a very affordable price. These cells and packs are now available in your local model shops.

These packs are available with our standard offers, at a very competitive price for such good quality!

 Manufacturing

Overlanders’ fine reputation for quality battery assembly began over 35 years ago, way back in mid 70’s when they started manufacturing packs for electric radio control cars in Leicester. The range of cells and packs has continued to grow to meet the needs of UK Radio Control modellers and industry. Most of our Overlander, Sanyo and Nimh packs are assembled here in the United Kingdom, on UK manufactured machines at our new factory in Forton, Lancs.  Our trained operatives always conform to manufacturers best practice assembly recommendations.

Generally our other packs of batteries are assembled in our China facility to exact UK Overlander specifications, we take pride in visiting our suppliers, we regard all our products being sourced or manufactured in China as good as our “home grown” products. As a company we are also keen to see that there are good working conditions and ethical standards for these distant workers, and visit our suppliers regularly.
Upto 2010 our mainstream business served the Radio Control modeller, now we also manufacture and supply to  NHS trusts, University education and research departments, Aerospace industries and our products are also favoured by a major F1 team and motorcycle GP teams.

Our battery assembly department can design custom battery packs for your applications however small or large. Overlander complies with all European requirements and in 2012 is working to attain ISO9001 for our UK assembly factory.

Our bespoke battery production facilities include; custom battery pack assembly, computer controlled capacity testing, capacity discharge welding, wire assembly and production, lable design, and laminate printing

Stay tuned for more information, and the arrival of a new website, dedicated to the design and manufacturing of custom battery packs.

NEWS

Changes within Overlander

First of all, our greatest apologies for missing last month’s newsletter. This is due to a changeover in Overlander’s staff members. We have recently waved goodbye to Jon, our head of IT and Marketing, who has left us to pursue his personal business ventures. To take up his responsibilities within this role,

Dave Williams has now joined the team as the new head of IT and Marketing. Dave is a graduate of UCLAN in Preston, Lancashire, and has a background in Music, Design and Programming. He will mostly be improving the usability of our systems, website and ordering procedures, and also providing designs for newsletters, brochures and posters.

Here at Overlander our business has been very busy and strong recently, and as a result, we have taken on more staff to provide a higher level of service for our loyal and potential customers.

Hannah Coward has been with the team now for a few months now, and you will most likely have had the pleasure of talking to her on our order and helpline. Hannah is taking care of our sales and customer services and will be on the end of our phones to help you with your enquiries.

Also joining the Overlander team is Matt Dickenson. Matt has been taken on to oversee our stock levels and online store lines, ensuring that you (the customer) has your favourite products available to you through our online store, phone orders and via our hobby store stockists. Matt will also be on the frontline of our store, taking orders and helping with your enquiries.

New Low Self Discharge range and Sanyo Eneloop Price changes

Due to the recent increase in the price of nickel and recent currency inflation; Sanyo the manufacturer of Eneloop have increased the price of their cells to the consumers. This does mean that we will be increasing our prices of Eneloop cells and packs as of the 1st November 2011.

Please find pricing information in the table below.

These prices will be in effect as of the 1st November 2011, so get your orders in quick to get the Eneloop cells at their current mark-up!

As an alternative to the Eneloop range, and coming to Overlander late October, is a new exciting range of Low Self-Discharge (LSD) NiMH batteries, to be added to our excellent Premium Sport range of cells and battery packs, with ten variations of pack sizes and variations.

Blade 120SR – Battery fitting guide for Overlander Heli SR 550mAh 3.7v Lipo

Using the Overlander Heli SR 550mAh 3.7v Lipo Battery with the Blade 120SR will provide higher performance and longer flying times between charges, due to the larger size and superior quality of Overlander’s Batteries.

We have had some feedback that the batteries are a bit tight to fit into the Blade’s battery carrier.

Follow this guide, and you’ll be flying in no time!

For ease of explanation, we have removed the helicopter canopy.

With the heli held  UPSIDE DOWN, and the battery facing LABEL DOWN, slide the battery into the battery carrier. (See example below)

If removing the Overlander label makes fitting easier, you will not affect the warranty on this product by doing so.

Be aware that the Overlander battery will be a very tight fit and will need some gentle force to slight the battery into the mounting.

Using the Overlander battery is definitely worth the investment, and definitely wont fall out!!

All the best!

Dave – Overlander Batteries

Please be aware that removing the label (if you need to) will not effect the warranty on this product.

LiPo Stacking and Winding

All Overlander Sport 25C and 60C LiPo cells are manufactured using the “STACKING” method, unlike many of the cheaper Chinese imports which are manufactured using the “WINDING” construction, a much cheaper construction method, with very limited discharge rates (15C – 18C) but often quoted as 20 – 25C. Stacking construction is known for its longevity, and gives stronger more reliable voltage.

How can I tell the difference?

  1. Ask. If they don’t know it will probably be folded
  2. Folded cells have the + & – electrode from one end of the cell. Stacking have the + from one end and the – at the other

Battery Voltage and Capacity Checker

This nifty device can calculate the voltage output and total capacity in a battery pack and also each individual cell in that pack!

The checker will work with LiPo, LiFe, Li-Ion, Nimh and NiCad. See picture (right).

Enerpro Low Self Discharge Battery Range

The Enerpro battery range is the perfect alternative to Eneloop batteries. This range are not made by Sanyo but retain the same low self discharge qualities of a hybrid rechargeable battery. You can check out the range here.

How To Balance a Prop

Overlander’s Whirlwind propeller range is sold unbalanced so we have now introduced prop balancers to go along with the range.

To show you how easy it is to balance a prop, I had a go balancing one myself to show you how to do it! All you need is a propeller (I used a Whirlwind 13 x 7 electric prop), a prop balancer and some clear polyurethane varnish (or similar).

Step 1: Slide the prop balancer through the centre of the prop and secure on either side.

Step2: Determine the heavier side to the propeller by balancing the prop on 2 level objects; I used 2 SubC cells (see picture). You can also achieve this by holding the prop balancer between your thumb and forefinger.

Step 3: Spray/Paint the lighter side of the prop with the varnish in order to balance out the weight; a trial and error approach is necessary to get the propeller balanced. DO NOT sand down the heavier side as this could weaken or damage the prop.
